A Celestial Atmosphere

A 4th Avenue bar has taken to the sky, offering an out of this world experience. Sky Bar, located at 536 N. 4th Avenue, opened its doors in November 2009, occupying the space that the infamous nightclub, North, inhabited for many years. Sky Bar replaces North, which was under different management, moving towards a positive direction.

The concept of this revamped bar is influenced by astronomy, a lifelong passion of owner Tony Vaccaro. Vaccaro also owns the neighboring Brooklyn Pizza Company. Tony explains, “I distinctly wanted an environment that was unlike any other bar, one that is inspirational and even a little educational.”

A banner reads, “Sky Bar is an astronomy influenced, solar powered, planetarium bar.” Solar powered? Yes, the bar is powered by the sun.  The use of renewable resources makes this bar unique, solar panels are used to power the bar and the neighboring Brooklyn Pizza Company.

Two large clear garage style doors open the bar to a breath of fresh air. Sky Bar is quaint, humble, and green. Exposed brick walls, high top tables, and black leather couches offer patrons a great way to enjoy a drink and carry conversations under the twilight of the stars.  The large bar at the South end of the building is topped off with a large glass chandelier and a landscape mirror, that extends from one end of the bar to the other, giving Sky Bar a distinct atmosphere.

Mounted on the roof of the bar is a telescope that is unleashed every night (weather permitting) and projectors then beam the images of the cosmos onto the walls, offering real-time images of the celestial glow.

Sky Bar offers many beers on tap with an array of bottled beers. Sky Bar is Solar Powered Café by Day, Astronomy Bar by Night, Vaccaro says, “Not only are we a bar, but we are a café by day.” Serving coffee and tea, day and night, is simply something bars usually don’t do.

Amidst the cocktails, coffee, nebulas and pool tables, patrons can also order food, by way of cell phone from Brooklyn Pizza Company and have it delivered to the bar.

Tony says his bar is not looking to attract any group in particular, and goes on to say, “The night skies are available to anyone, and so is this bar.” Every night is different at Sky Bar, Family, Open Mic, Live Music and Trivia nights, are on the Bar’s weekly schedule, offering something for everyone.
